Tired of complicated pie recipes? This apple pear crumble pie is designed to be as easy as it is delicious. With simple steps for both the fruit filling and the irresistible crumble topping, you can have a show-stopping dessert on the table without the stress. I even have a simple make ahead pie crust recipe to make the process even smoother. This pie represents the fall fruits of Cleveland.

What You Will Need:

  • 3 Granny Smith apples or other pie apple cored, peeled, and cut into 1/4 inch slices
  • 3 firm, ripe pears peeled and cut into 1/4 inch slices
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon of butter cut into 1/4 inch pieces
  • 9 inch pie crust
  • Crumble Topping
  • 1/2 cup of all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup of packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 4 tablespoons of butter cut into 1/4 inch pieces

The Apple and Pear Filling

This pie filling could not be easier! Just peel and core the apples and pears and slice them about 1/4 inch thick. Then, in an appropriately sized bowl, mix the cornstarch, cinnamon, and packed brown sugar together so the apple and pears are well coated. That is it. Pie filling is done! Set aside and move on to the topping.

Mixing the Crumble Topping for the Pie

The crumble is super easy also. Combine the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl that will allow you to massage the butter into the flour mixture. With your fingers, massage the butter into the dry ingredients. A sandy crumble will form. This is the topping for the pie. You are all set to assemble!

Filling and Baking the Crumble Pie

Place your pie crust in the bottom of the pie tin. Crimp the sides to your liking. Place the apple mixture next. One tip would be to set the pie on top of a lined baking tray to catch any drippings. After the apple mixture is in place, sprinkle the crumble on evenly. Bake at 350 degrees F for 40-50 minutes. Check on the pie after 30 minutes to make sure the crust is not overbaked. After 30 minutes, check every 5 minutes or so to ensure a golden brown crust and the pie liquids are bubbly.

The apple pear crumble pie would go great with some homemade vanilla ice cream!

FAQ’s:

Can I use different types of apples or pears?

Yes, you can use any firm, ripe pear. For apples, Granny Smiths are suggested because they hold their shape well, but any other pie apple will also work.

How do I know when the pie is done baking?

The pie is ready when the crust is a golden brown and the juices from the fruit filling are visibly bubbling up through the crumble topping.

Can I make this pie ahead of time?

You can prepare the pie and store it unbaked in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. You can also bake the pie a day in advance and store it at room temperature.

What can I serve with this apple pear crumble pie?

This pie is delicious on its own, but it pairs wonderfully with a dollop of vanilla ice cream, a scoop of homemade whipped cream, or a drizzle of salted caramel sauce.
