A Thousand Island Dressing Recipe varies from region to region and house to house. This recipe is a favorite of my family. The thousand island recipe started, from what I have read, in the Thousand Island region, located along the upper St Lawrence River between the United States and Canada. It started with one person and then morphed from there. This recipe is really the one that people make their own! I used to make a 1000 island dressing with ketchup, mayonnaise, and relish. Some people call this special sauce or secret sauce. Whatever you want to call it, it is a great dressing for all kinds of recipes!
This 1000 Island Dressing Recipe is a sandwich spread that is used for a reuben sandwich sauce, burgers, and other sandwiches. We also use the dressing on the Reuben Ravioli Recipe (pictured in the recipe)! But that is not to say you cannot use it on a salad or as a dip for vegetables. We definitely have used it for both!
The brown sugar is optional. We made this recipe without it and it tasted fine. A tablespoon of finely diced onion is the substituted for Onion powder. It tasted great too! I hope that you make your own tradition with this recipe!
Use the thousand island dressing recipe with the reuben ravioli or reuben egg rolls!
