There is nothing like a creamy, homemade blue cheese dressing, and this recipe delivers a classic flavor with a velvety texture that’s great for dipping. With only seven ingredients and a total time of ten minutes, it’s a quick and satisfying recipe that’s also low-carb and keto-friendly. You will love how easy it is to make this versatile dressing for salads, wings, and more. This is just as easy to make as my ranch dressing recipe.

What You Will Need:

  • 4 ounces of crumbled blue cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/4 cup of buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup of mayonnaise

Blue Cheese Options

There are many types of blue cheese to choose from. Strong, crumbled, rind, no rind, the list goes on. I stuck with a crumbled blue cheese off of the shelf the first time I made this salad dressing. I did experiment with a combination of soft Amish blue cheese and a strong blue cheese with a rind. It did change the taste up a bit! If the amount of blue cheese is too much for the recipe then feel free to cut back on the amount of blue cheese you use. Make it your own!

Combining the Ingredients

How do you make blue cheese dressing? There really is not much to it. Take all of the ingredients and combine them in a bowl! It is that easy. If you need the dressing in a rush and do not have time to chill it, don’t worry. The ingredients will get to know each other in time. Chilling in the fridge will give them more time to mingle, the dressing will thicken a touch, and the blue cheese will gain some momentum in the flavor realm. This is a thick dressing so if you like your dressing on the thinner side then do not hesitate to add a tablespoon or two of milk to thin it out.

I have found it best to let it chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to thicken, but that is optional especially if you are in a crunch for time.

FAQ’s:

What’s the best type of blue cheese to use?

The best cheese to use is the one you like. It is suggested that you stick with a less pungent blue cheese if you are new to making this dressing.

How long does homemade blue cheese dressing last?

When stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, homemade blue cheese dressing will stay fresh for up to two weeks.

Can I make this recipe thinner?

Absolutely. To achieve a thinner consistency, simply whisk in an additional tablespoon or two of milk until you reach your desired thickness.

Can I use light mayonnaise?

Yes, you can substitute light mayonnaise for regular mayonnaise, but it may change the overall texture and richness of the dressing.

What can I use this dressing for besides salad?

This versatile dressing is also a delicious dip for chicken wings, a spread for sandwiches, a topping for burgers, or a dip for vegetables like carrots and celery.

It is not essential in a pinch to chill the dressing. The chill time just gives the flavors time to get to know each other.
